Language increases the means for deceit and self-deception. Especially with respect to events distant in space and time, which are consequently more difficult to challenge. [Also with matters logically distant, that is, abstract or complex.]

Increased cognitive load seems to be the limiting factor in self-conscious deception. The challenge is in constructing a plausible alternative reality. This is harder when constructing an elaborate alternative.
