Psychological analysis of pain conditions and pain sufferers must overcome a number of serious impediments. Some of these have been discussed previously. Pain can't be accurately measured (Pain Measurement). Research into pain physiology has limitations (Pain Research). Studies of human behavior, particularly those based on behavioral psychology perspectives and methods, tend to be of the "black box" character (Methodological Challenges in Psychology).
On top of all this, psychological analysis of pain is impeded by the complex and varied nature of painful conditions. This section presents some of the known ways in which the complexity of pain can interfere with judgments about the role of mind and body in pain sufferers. In addition to these, it includes some general sources of noise in psychological analysis, whether it is being done in a laboratory or in a clinical setting.
