Damage to a peripheral nerve can result in an intense burning pain in the area served by the damaged nerve. The area of pain is usually less sensitive to stimulation than surrounding skin. The pain often develops gradually and spreads beyond the area innervated by the damaged nerve. Causalgia often disappears gradually as the peripheral nerve heals.
