A variety of other self-report measures exist. Measures similar to the pain intensity VAS exist for what is called “pain affect.” Scales of pain affect include words such as “tolerable,” “distressing,” “miserable,” and “frightful.”
Self-report measures are also used to collect information on the sensory qualities of peoples' pain. Such scales can be used to aid in diagnosis or to provide more detail on the effects of treatments. The Neuropathic Pain Symptom Inventory has twelve items that provide details about spontaneous pains, triggered pains, and paraesthesias/dysthesias (unusual and unpleasant symptoms). The Neuropathic Pain Scale and the Pain Quality Assessment Scale are additional questionnaires for use with neuropathic pains.
