Investigators must use a lot of ingenuity to explore various aspects of pain, and I'll briefly summarize the methods used and the strengths and limitations of each. It is part of the nature of pain that it is largely occult (that is, it is hidden) to others. The story of how such a personal experience can be explored is interesting of itself.
